The town itself is a historic marvel that looks more like something from new England then Florida. The historic district has over 900 historical buildings and points of interest. One of those places is the Gibson Inn which is a historical working Inn that is still in operation today. It's one of only a few in the united states which make it a rare pleasure.


While in town be sure to take the self-guided historic walking tour. It has 37 places of local historical relevance and will draw you deep into the town's past and character.  If you want to meet some of the town's colorful past residents and hear their stories then the Chestnut Street Cemetery Walking Tour is a must do.

The Orman House Historic State Park Is a grand antebellum home that sits on a bluff overlooking the bay of the Apalachicola river. It was built in 1830 by Thomas Orman who was a local cotton merchant.  Also located on the house grounds is the lovely Chapman botanical gardens that you won't want to miss. 


The Raney House Museum is a mixture of federal and Greek revival that was built in 1838 by David Greenway Raney who was also in the cotton trade. He later served two terms as mayor. 



Apalachicola's Abundant Wildlife


Another aspect that adds to the escapism factor of this town is it is surrounded by nature and wildlife. 


If you like hiking and camping there is plenty of wilderness to explore. the Apalachicola National Forest encompasses 564,000 acres. If that's not enough nestled within it is Tate's Hell State Forest which is an additional 202,437 worth of forest and wetlands to explore.  


If you like having a waterfront view then check out the Apalachicola Paddling Trail System. It has been named one of the united states top 12 paddling destinations and is seriously breathtaking to see.  Maps are available and contain many trails to choose from.
